NSFW: Pomrad’s Knights

WARNING: DO CONSUME WITH CAFFEINE

If you’re at work and a few mugs deep, you may want to steer clear until you have no additional responsibilities or sources of stimulation. Unfortunately for me, I had no idea what I was getting myself into and was blind-sided by the insanity that is this album. Needless to say, it was a hell of a morning trying to get work done (luckily I was working from home).

Hailing from Germany, Pomrad is clearly a well-trained musician and producer that has as many tasty synth grooves in his arsenal as he does electronic wubs. Knights is an absolutely bonkers, off-the-wall collection of tracks that put Pomrad’s talent on display as if you were sitting three feet away from a jumbotron. It’s a pre-meditated whirlwind of pop, funk, and EDM that leaves you wondering what the hell just happened.

After a brief prologue, the title track starts the album off with some high energy trap-like beats, something you might hear from the likes of Keys n Krates. This is quickly followed by several stank-face inducing grooves, which then take you directly into a room that sounds like Hudson Mohawke is behind the decks. Before you know it, you’ll be squinting your face again and nodding your head to some synth-funk. This relentless back and forth reaches a climax when “Cookies & Fish”, a blast-from-the-past dubstep banger, is immediately followed by a seemingly 1980’s prom ballad in “Stop the Thinking”. The album seems to round out smoothly until it slaps you in the face one more time with tracks like “Shredman Is Here” and “Dans”.

Like the anomaly that is the 2 for $1 tacos at Jack in the Box, Pomrad’s Knights is something I can’t quite wrap my head around: utterly disgusting, and inexplicably delicious. Should you give this album a listen (you should), heed my warning, find a place with no one around and things to drum on, and hide the coffee.
